Blooming Weston has brought life – and a dash of colour – to several rain gardens across Weston-super-Mare, thanks to a £500 Sunshine Grant awarded late last year.

The funding has supported a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners in revitalising local green spaces, enhancing both their appearance and biodiversity.

After identifying a need for improvement in a number of public areas, Blooming Weston set out to enrich the variety of plants and flowers on display. The project has already begun to brighten key spots around the town, creating more welcoming and visually appealing environments for residents and visitors alike.

Several rain gardens on Baker Street have now been planted with a range of colourful flowers and plants, such as fennel, muscari and nepeta – plants that Carole Stevens from Blooming Weston says are excellent for pollinating insects.

Carole added: “We planted in the middle of March when the weather first improved. We tend to be very lucky with the weather, so we don’t get soaked when planting out.”

Volunteers say the grant has made a tangible difference, enabling them to introduce new planting schemes and carry out essential maintenance. With continued community support, the group hopes to build on this progress and further enhance Weston-super-Mare’s green spaces in the months ahead.
