Burnham and Weston Energy’s Sunshine Fund has awarded over £30,000 to support local projects across Highbridge, Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-super-Mare. The fund provides small grants to projects that benefit both local communities and the environment!
Highlights from This Year’s Funded Projects:
🌿 The Strawberry Line Society – £2,720
Children will be co-creating a vibrant climate change mural, celebrating the rich biodiversity and heritage of the Strawberry Line. The mural will also feature the local solar farm, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own climate actions.
🌊 Birnbeck Regeneration Trust, Weston-super-Mare – £8,000
This grant supports a new marine plastic recycling workshop in Weston-super-Mare, where discarded marine plastic will be transformed by volunteers into useful products such as buttons and furniture. These products will be sold to generate further funding for the charity.
🌳 Play Wild CIC – £1,680
Funding will enable 10 outdoor learning sessions for home-educated children and their families, helping them explore the natural world. A special visit to the solar farm is also planned!
💧 Growing at Grove Park – £1,500
Volunteers can now work more comfortably and sustainably thanks to a repaired roof and a new rainwater harvesting system in Grove Park.
🌼 Little Learners Preschool, East Huntspill Primary – £700
A brand-new sensory garden and outdoor learning area is nearly complete – and already being enjoyed by local children.
🍅 The Purple Sheep Pantry – £600
Members received support to grow tomatoes and beans at home, with surplus produce returning to the pantry to support others.
🏖 Friends of Berrow Beach – £1000
We helped buy a steel shed to store their battery-powered trolley – now used to collect bulky waste from the beach.
“Thank you Burnham and Weston Energy! The shed and trolley project is now complete and we’re hoping to take the trolley out on its first operational run tomorrow – Berrow beach clean day!”
— Nigel Hoy, Friends of Berrow Beach
While this round of funding is now closed, we’re excited to announce that the Sunshine Fund will reopen for new applications in July 2025.
