Burnham & Weston Energy is pleased to announce the reopening of its Sunshine Fund. This is a great opportunity for community groups in Burnham on Sea, Highbridge, Weston super Mare and nearby parishes to apply for grant funding for projects that benefit both people and the planet.
Operated by Burnham & Weston Energy CIC, the Sunshine Fund uses surplus income from its 9.3 MW solar farm at Wick Farm to support projects that deliver environmental, social or wellbeing outcomes. The solar farm, with nearly 36,000 panels, generates enough electricity for over 2,000 homes, and profits go back into the community.
Since its launch in 2019, the Fund has awarded grants to many local organisations working on everything from biodiversity and nature education to community hall upgrades and energy efficiency improvements.
Projects funded by the scheme in previous years have included things like new LED lighting for community halls or solar panels for a small community shop. Applicants are encouraged to get in touch if they think they know of a good cause in the community.

Why It Matters
For many local groups, accessing funding for green or wellbeing-focused projects can be a major challenge. The Sunshine Fund helps overcome that by supporting local solutions – led by local people – that improve everyday life, reduce environmental impact and bring communities closer together.
Previous projects have included:
- LED lighting upgrades in village halls
- Nature-friendly planting and trails
- Community fridges and food clubs
- Repair cafes and reuse schemes
- Energy advice and insulation work
Looking Forward
Burnham & Weston Energy hopes this latest round will inspire new ideas and support even more local projects that put community energy to good use.
This is your community, powered by your energy – let’s make the most of it.
